Roguelike Development in the 21st Century
I actually don't mind your normal display. The simplest thing you could do to condense it would be to remove the HP / MP bars, but having been playing Dungeon Crawl a lot lately, I like the visual and the easy access to combat weapon / magic information. I think I'd have to play Kharne a while to decide if I really didn't like it... I'm tempted to say leave it as is.Also, for the "uncluttered" display, I think a blank line between the header and map area would be helpful.
Yea, I really don't think your current system is too cluttered. I mean sure it's more than some RL, but I like the benefits of a constant mini-map and hp/mp bars over an all game interface.

The more spartan interface is certainly a lot more atmospheric and allows more screen space to display the game itself. Maybe a little drop arrow that the player can click or press tab to show or hide the full panoply of indicators?
