Oh, yeah, that's a problem. I've tried to get around it by generally making creatures become aware of you only when they become visible *to you*, but kobolds (mainly) can still get a load of shots off at you before you can do anything.
There are a few options to solve this:
a) I could rejig the energy system slightly to allow an extra turn or two before awakened creatures can do anything.
b) I could increase the energy cost of ranged combat to cut down on the lethalness of said creatures (they would get off fewer attacks per round).
c) I could reduce the frequency of ranged combat (i.e. creatures would be more prone to melee)
d) do not allow ranged-only creatures to attack you from the very edge of your vision (i.e. they would have to move in a square).
Having said that though, I do want kobolds (for example) to remain quite deadly, as befitting their Kobold Commando brethern in Baldur's Gate.
